Dimeji Lawal Calls for Urgent Appointment of Super Eagles Head Coach

Dimeji Lawal, a former Nigerian international, has stressed the urgency for the Nigeria Football Federation NFF to appoint a new head coach for the Super Eagles following Finidi George’s resignation in June. With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON qualifiers approaching, Lawal emphasizes the need for swift action to ensure the team's preparedness. Since George’s departure, Nigeria has experienced inconsistent performances, potentially affecting their standing in both AFCON and World Cup qualifiers.

George, who served as an assistant to Jose Peseiro during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, managed the team briefly for 40 days, leaving the head coach position vacant. Lawal highlighted the importance of timely appointments, noting that delays can hinder a coach's ability to effectively communicate and strategize with players. He also suggested appointing an interim coach if a permanent decision cannot be made promptly.

The Super Eagles are set to face Rwanda, Benin, and Libya in their AFCON qualifying campaign, where only the top two teams from each group will qualify for the tournament in Morocco in 2025. Lawal insists that a new head coach needs adequate time to acclimate and develop successful strategies, emphasizing that the appointment is crucial for the Super Eagles' performance in upcoming competitions.

Editorial

The call by Dimeji Lawal for the urgent appointment of a new head coach for the Super Eagles is both timely and necessary. The importance of stable and effective leadership cannot be overstated, especially with the critical AFCON qualifiers on the horizon. The NFF must recognize that delays in appointing a new coach could significantly impact the team’s performance and morale.
